The Acorn - Good Enough

i only have a handful of songs from this Canadian band, some of which i really like. They've put out 2 albums and 2 EP's since '04. This newest find is an almost unrecognizable cover of song that is dear to my heart - Cyndi Lauper's Good Enough was the theme song to one of the greatest movies ever put on film....

i finally got my hands on Two Short Stories that came out in April. As the title suggests, the album is a bona fide 2-sider. Side A - Freeze and Thaw. Side B - What Is This Wilderness? Each takes you on an acoustic journey with waxing and waning intensity as the tracks roll on. If you're looking for a solid album that has a story (or two) to tell, pick this one up.

Friday. It feels good to be on time, and to have some tracks to post. If you read my album forecast, you know there were a few good ones that came out on Tuesday. Got most of 'em (i had The Felice Brothers ship to where i'll be next week). But today you get a little taste of everything - brand new tracks, old tracks that i just got, and even one new face:

i've always liked The Black Crowes, but never been a huge fan. I really like Warpaint after the first couple listens. There's some classic Crowes bluesy sounds on it (Jospehine, Walk Believer Walk, Wounded Bird), but also, there's a new, more acoustic/folk feel on some tracks (Locust Street, There's Gold In Them Hills, Whoa Mule). Check it out.

Haven't seen their movie, Once, yet, but i'm impressed with this duo. Original, inventive sounds. Their cover of one of my favortite Dylan tunes is really well done. You can find their Oscar-winning original song Falling Slowly just about everywhere.

There was considerable interest in the first Jayber Crow song i posted, so i found some more. This song has a cool battle-march feel to it.

i saw the video for this song a couple years ago, but i just bought 1000 Kisses the other day. i don't think Patty Griffin puts out anything that isn't stellar.

Nizlopi is an acoustic duo (Luke Concannon and John Parker) from the UK. Haven't heard a lot of their stuff, and some of it may be just a little too Hip-Hop for my taste (beat-boxing and electronics), but the big stand-up bass keeps it just folky enough for me.

New Digs......

Here we are again - another Friday. Had a busy week with school, and i'm leaving in the morning for a field trip (yes i said 'field trip' - that's what geologists do) so i won't get anything posted this weekend. Don't have a lot of time tonight, but i have a couple new tunes in my library i'm diggin'.

Also, some good news - i got my blog added to Elbo.ws. If you don't know, it's a music blog archiver like The Hype Machine, only better. For one, they added 'This Mornin I Am Born Again' (as of now, the Hype Machine doesn't think i meet the standards to be added to their site. One of the requirements is 'generates discussion', so start leavin' some comments, people). Also, on Elbows, you can search not only artists and song titles, but searches will return any text from blogs, so even if bloggers don't post tracks from artsits/topics you're interested in, you can still find some written info. Check it out.

Jayber Crow is Pete Becker Nelson and Zach Hawkins. They play a guitar and mandolin with a little tambourine mixed in. It's folky acoustic music with good harmonies. Lookin' forward to a debut album.

Punk Bluegrass is the best simple desciption of O'Death i can come up with. Five guys with guitars, a little banjo, fiddle, drums, and plenty of hollerin'. Good, unique sound.

mp3: Beaver Nelson - Things Get Shaky 'Round Midnight ~ from The Last Hurrah (1998)

i've known about this guy for a while, but was reminded of him tonight when a buddy of mine told me i missed a show of his in Huntstville tonight. Beaver's got 5 albums to his name since '98. Well-written songs from interesting perspectives that are topped off with a twangy high tenor.
